The Art of Phrasing: How to Tell a Story with Every Note

Two musicians can play the exact same notes, but one will move you to tears while the other sounds like a robot. The difference is Phrasing.

1. The Vocal Analogy

Instrumentalists should always think like singers. Where would you take a breath if you were singing this line? That 'Space' is what makes the melody feel human. In our Online Guitar class, we focus on 'breath-informed' phrasing.

2. Micro-Dynamics

Don't play every note at the same volume. Accent the important notes and let the 'ghost notes' fade into the background. This 'melodic contour' creates a sense of narrative and emotion.

3. Timing and 'Rubato'

Sometimes, being perfectly on the beat is boring. 'Rubato' is the art of stealing time—slowing down slightly in an emotional passage and catching up later. This elasticity is what makes Best music classes graduates stand out from the rest.
