In the West, they have keys. In India, we have Raags. A Raag is a melodic framework that creates a specific emotional atmosphere. It is the heart of every Online Hindustani music class.
1. The Time Theory
Unlike Western music, Raags are tied to the time of day. Raag Yaman is for the evening, while Raag Ahir Bhairav is for the dawn. This alignment with the natural rhythm of the world is what gives Indian music its healing 'Sukoon.'
2. Vadi and Samvadi
Every Raag has a 'Vadi' (the most important note) and a 'Samvadi' (the second most important). They are like the King and the Minister. By emphasizing these notes, you 'unlock' the soul of the Raag.
3. The Art of Alaap
The Alaap is the slow, rhythmic-less introduction where the singer explores the notes. It's a form of meditation. We teach this even in our Online Vocal Class for beginners to build patience and melodic depth.
