Piano Posture: Why Your Back Hurts and How to Fix It
Sukoon Academy
April 27, 2026
Many piano students focus so much on their fingers that they forget the rest of their body. If you feel tension in your shoulders or pain in your lower back, your posture is working against you.
The Bench Height Secret
Your elbows should be slightly higher than the keys. If you sit too low, you have to 'pull' the keys up; if you sit too high, you 'crash' down. A level forearm allows for maximum speed and control.
The 'Floating' Wrist
A locked wrist is the enemy of expression. Think of your wrist as a shock absorber. It should be flexible, moving slightly with every phrase. This 'breathing' wrist technique is a core pillar of our online piano classes.
Footing and Balance
Keep your feet flat on the floor (unless using the pedals). Your feet are your anchors; they allow your upper body to move freely and lean into the piano for louder, more dramatic sections without losing balance.
